Kazan Film Festival will be held in September 2020

The 16th edition of the Kazan International Muslim Film Festival will be held in the capital of Tatarstan from4 to 9 September 2020. The decision was recently made by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Tatarstan and the organizing committee of the festival that hopes that the current situation will improve, and the festival will take place in its original form. However, some events of the festival might be held online.

The entries to the festival are accepted till 1 June. Despite the pandemic, the number of entries that have been already submitted is quite high and reaches 398 films from 41 countries of the world from Sweden to Australia, from the USA to Malaysia. At the same time, certain changes were made as regards the nominations of the competition programme, which includes 12 full-length feature, 10 full-length documentaries, 20 short feature and 10 National Programme films in 2020. It is necessary to note that the films produced before 2019 cannot participate in the competition programme.

The selection committee is headed by a film critic Sergey Anashkin (Russia). His team includes a film expert Svetlana Slapke (Germany) as well as a historian and culturologist, the director of the New Institute of Cultural Studies, a research associate of Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) Nina Kochelyaeva (Russia).

Since 2005 Kazan Muslim Film Festival is one of the largest film forums in Russia held annually in the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan. The festival focuses on Russian and international films promoting the ideas of peacebuilding, intercultural dialogue, and tolerance regardless of their religious affiliations. The concept of the festival is reflected through its official motto ‘Through the dialogue of cultures to the culture of dialogue’

The festival is organized by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Tatarstan, the Council of Muftis of the Russian Federation, the Executive Committee of Kazan, Tatarkino State Budgetary Institution of Culture with the participation of the regional branch of the Union of Cinematographers of the Russian Federation and with the partnership of Russia-Islamic World Strategic Vision Group. The festival is held under the support of Rustam Minnikhanov the President of the Republic of Tatarstan.
